Environmental Policy Statement:
At Brother UK we feel that it is our duty to do whatever we can to protect and preserve our environment. For this reason we have worked towards, and achieved, ISO 14001 accreditation.
Environmental management is an integral part of our business decision making process, and we regularly measure our performance, and strive to make continual improvements. The ultimate responsibility and authority for all corporate issues lies with the Managing Director, and this is supported (at Board Level) by the Communications Director, who is responsible for all CSR related issues (including the Environment). In addition, there will also be a member of the Senior Management Team who is responsible for ensuring that the initiatives and projects are in place to meet the environmental objectives of the business.
In order to measure our current position, and pinpoint areas where action is required, an environmental impact assessment has been carried out, identifying appropriate projects and operational procedures for Brother UK to undertake. Details of these projects and procedures are contained within the Brother UK procedural manuals, and are subject to regular audit and review.
As part of this assessment, we have identified those aspects of our business that need to be measured, and set appropriate targets for improvement in our environmental performance.
We continuously work to decrease our use of water, energy and materials, and projects are under way in all areas of the business. We are also purchasing a large percentage of our energy from renewable sources, and will increase this percentage annually. This continuous process results in small changes annually, but over the years significant reductions in our waste disposal and water / energy use have been made.
We actively work to decrease the amount of waste we generate, and encourage the use of recycling of any unavoidable waste. Particular emphasis is put on the reduction in packaging waste, and efforts are made to source packaging materials that can be reused, or which are manufactured from recycled materials. Paper usage has also been targeted, and as well as the switch over to recycled paper, we have schemes in place to encourage the use of duplex printing (use of both sides of the paper), and also for the recycling of office paper.
Although Brother UK does not manufacture products on site, we are increasingly involved in product specification and development. Through this involvement, we are able to ensure that products and packaging materials are recyclable wherever possible, and that product lifecycles are lengthened to further reduce product wastage.
We are also mindful of our impact on the local community, and make every effort to minimise noise and light pollution from the site, and have procedures in place to deal with any hazardous substances handled on the premises.
We are also working with our suppliers to ensure that they are aware of our actions, and in particular we are working with our logistics providers to ensure that the environmental effects of transport are considered, and the impacts reduced where appropriate.
We always ensure that our products and operations comply with all applicable legislation, and actively work to support new environmental legislation as appropriate. We already have project teams dealing with the effects of the WEEE and RoHS directives, and will continue to monitor EU legislation as it progresses.
We constantly work to inform and educate our workforce, to improve their environmental awareness and responsibility. This is done through in-house recycling schemes and general inter-company communications.
By doing the above we are able to demonstrate that we have developed, implemented and maintained a management system which satisfies our needs, our customer’s needs and meets the requirements of ISO 14001.
