The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Regulations
Brother has worked towards the introduction of the above, which is a European Directive, and became UK legislation in January 2007, for full implementation in July of that year.
There are several steps we took to be prepared, and they involved all levels of the organisation:-
Brother Industries
All Brother Factories world-wide are fully committed to producing products that have minimum impact on the environment, and most have achieved ISO 14001 accreditation. As part of this commitment they have included in the design process for each new product:-
• Durability / Long Product Life
• Ease of Disassembly and Recycling
• Identification of Plastic Material
• Energy Saving Features
• Reduction in use of Hazardous Substances
• Use of Recycled Material & Re-use of Parts
Brother International Europe Ltd
Together with our European headquarters, we are monitoring the introduction of legislation in individual European countries, in particular the recycling targets that will need to be met by Member States.
Brother UK Ltd
We are members of ICER (Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling), and as part of this have been in regular discussion with other manufacturers, and the DTI.
We have worked with our customers to put arrangements in place that will allow all parties to meet the new legislation as cost effectively as possible.
Here are some of the steps we have taken to prepare:-
• We have ensured that all new product carries the appropriate WEEE marking.
• We have developed internal systems to ensure that any data requirements can be met.
• We have become members of the Valpak Compliance Scheme, to meet our obligations for Business to Consumer (B2C) transactions. Our Producer Registration Number is WEE/FD0133ZR/PRO
• We have formed relationships with appropriate partners (in recycling, logistics and refurbishment) to ensure that we can provide a take back service, should any of our customers require it.
This will meet our obligations for Business to Business (B2B) transactions, and can be tailored to an individual customer’s needs.
As new developments occur, we will update this statement.
