Increasing efficiency in your practice. Part 6: Smart Scheduling

In our final instalment of how technological innovation can help alleviate some of the time pressures faced by GPs we look at how one tool claims to take the guesswork out of patient scheduling.

A key aspect of running an efficient GP surgery is having the ability to schedule properly – something that is often out of a GPs hands thanks to no-shows and late appointment cancellations.

However, Smart Scheduling claims to assist patient volumes by identifying which patients are at risk of being a no-show using machine learning algorithms.

Predicting appointment no-shows

Patients who fail to turn up to their appointments have a major negative impact on staff time, revenues and appointment access for other patients. Predicting which patients are most likely to be no-shows, however, enables practice staff to manage patient flow more effectively.

Smart Scheduling is a system for optimising patient waiting times and minimising the impact of appointment no-shows. The programme predicts missed appointments and cancellations by using patients’ histories to determine who is likely to cancel or miss an appointment.

For instance, a high-risk patient will be prompted with a reminder. If the patient cannot be reached, there is a good chance they will not show up at all. Another booking could then be made for that time slot, keeping the appointment flow consistent throughout the day.

With GP workload currently a key concern in primary care, tools and innovations that improve efficiency are increasingly expected to play an important role in ensuring care is always available to those who need it.
